Privacy policy

This privacy policy explains what information Maren van Essen collects when you visit marenvanessen.com, subscribe to the newsletter, or interact with content on this site, and what is done with that information.

This site is operated from Canada by 2612437 ALBERTA LTD., and follows the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). If you visit from the European Union or United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) also applies. California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

Information collected

When you subscribe to the newsletter or a free resource, you provide your email address. That information is stored on the email platform used to send these messages.

When you visit the site, standard analytics information is collected automatically. This includes your IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and time spent on the site. This data is gathered and used to understand which content readers find useful.

If you purchase a product, payment is processed by Stripe or PayPal. That processor handles your credit card details directly. Your card information is never stored on this site.

If you leave a comment, send a message through the contact form, or reply to an email, the content of that message and the email address you used are retained so the conversation can continue.

How information is used

Your email address is used to send the newsletter, free resources you requested, course updates if you've enrolled, and occasional offers connected to my work. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email.

Analytics data is used to improve the site, decide which topics to write about more often, and understand where readers are arriving from.

Purchase information is used to deliver your purchase, provide customer support, and send transactional emails about your order.

Your information is not sold, rented, or traded. Ever.

Affiliate links and earnings disclosure

Some links on this site and in the newsletter are affiliate links. When you click one and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. These commissions help support the work published here.

Affiliate relationships currently include Amazon Associates. Affiliate links are clearly disclosed when used, in keeping with the Canadian Competition Bureau's guidelines and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's endorsement guides.

Only products that align with this work's values are recommended. A commission does not influence which products get mentioned.

Cookies

This site uses cookies. Some are necessary for the site to function, such as those that remember whether you've dismissed a popup. Others are set by analytics tools to measure traffic. Affiliate networks may also place cookies on your device when you click an affiliate link, so the originating site can be credited for any resulting purchase.

You can disable cookies in your browser settings. Some features of the site may not work properly if you do.

Third-party services

When you interact with any of those services through this site, their privacy practices apply to that interaction.

Your rights

Under PIPEDA, you can ask what personal information is held about you, ask for corrections, and request that it be deleted, subject to legal record-keeping requirements.

If GDPR applies to you, you also have the right to data portability, the right to object to processing, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

If you are a California resident, the CCPA gives you the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete it, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.

To exercise any of these rights, email [your contact email]. Requests are responded to within 30 days.

Data retention

Email subscriber information is kept for as long as you remain subscribed, plus a reasonable period afterward for record-keeping. Purchase records are kept for seven years to meet Canadian tax requirements. Analytics data is retained for 26 months.

Security

Reasonable technical and organizational measures protect the information collected through this site. No method of internet transmission is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be guaranteed, but care is taken with what you share.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and information is not knowingly collected from them. If a parent or guardian believes a child has provided information, please contact me, and I will delete it.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated occasionally. When that happens, the "Last updated" date at the top will change. Significant changes will be announced in the newsletter.
